While researching Guideless validation on Reddit, I kept seeing the same pain point: people loved the idea of multi-day adventures but were overwhelmed by the planning complexity. I recognized this from my own bikepacking experiences - spending entire weekends trying to figure out daily segments, find accommodations that weren't fully booked, balance budget constraints with decent lodging, and account for elevation changes that could make or break a day's ride. What should be the fun part (planning the adventure) became a frustrating logistics nightmare that deterred people from actually going. I built Etappa using the same systematic problem-solving approach I use with client migrations: break down the complex process into manageable steps, automate the tedious parts (accommodation search, distance calculations, elevation analysis), and create a system that makes the difficult decision-making transparent and manageable. Just like migrating a client from legacy platforms, the goal was to eliminate the overwhelming complexity while preserving the control and customization that matters to users.
